Abstract
The transport of goods and services through sea routes is one of the activities with greater expansion since the beginning of this type of trade, a situation that has derived in the economic growth of various nations, but in the negative impact to the environment due to the considerable amount of pollutant emissions to the ecosystem. This situation has led to the proposal of new models of development on a sustainable base, so this work is proposed as an evaluation tool in the maritime industry. Specifically, the objective of this study is to analyze four maritime alternatives within a port-to-port route between container ship terminals of Shanghai and New York/New Jersey, applying a model of multi-criteria assessment based on MIVES to explore sustainability under environmental, social, and economic requirements. For the final definition of the eight criteria and the fifteen indicators presented, the state of the art was taken as a reference, and then go through a review and weighting process by a panel of seven experts. The results obtained suggest important conclusions that include, for example, that shorter distance routes have better environmental and economic evaluation despite being those where a toll is paid, and in general that the Panama Canal is the alternative with the highest global sustainability index. The study presents a relevant contribution to the maritime industry and opens the way to new lines of research on other types of routes and vessels, as well as on refinement and quantification of social indicators.
