Abstract
The master thesis focuses on the evaluation of a laboratory setup for testing the potential of
ozonation as an additional polishing step on the removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD)
using synthetically produced metalworking wastewater. This includes an introduction to
metalworking fluids, the objectives of the experimentation, a literature review about ozonation
basics, the mass transfer gas phase to liquid phase and the oxidation kinetics of ozone.
With regard to the practical part of the thesis, the study is followed by a description of the
laboratory setup designed to perform the proposed process, an explanation of the planned
experimental conditions and a safety evaluation of the trials and the related performance
indicators for the evaluation of the ozonation step.
The study is followed by the start-up process of the laboratory setup and the description of the
initial tests to define the proper operational conditions. Regarding the results of the
experimentation, the present study focuses on the evaluation of the COD removal and mass
transfer efficiency gas / liquid phase for the metalworking wastewater.
Finally, the study concludes by the discussion of the potential implementation of ozonation as
polishing step for metalworking wastewater and an evaluation of the optimal operational
conditions. The discussion is based on the results from the laboratory work.
