Abstract
This study is a continuation of a series of theses both by other international authors and final theses by other UPC students. The main objective is the study and understanding of different epicyclic gears with the finite element method and the analysis of the results with statistical techniques such as the Taguchi method. One of the added values of this study is the contribution of new knowledge to the understanding of the mechanical behaviour of commercial gears which, to date, have only been studied from a hydraulic point of view. To this end, a systemic methodology is defined for Finite Element simulations, which has not been used so far by other authors. Once the results have been obtained, they are compared with the current state of the art and knowledge in the field is extended by providing results and studies of geometries that are on the market but not easily available, and which have not been studied from a structural point of view. Finally, the conclusions of these analyses are checked by carrying out a Taguchi study to study the importance of certain parameters, both geometric and of boundary and working conditions, in the design of the geometries and results of the simulations, through studies of the variance that these contribute to the system. During this thesis, the reader will see that the methodology developed is validated, comparing the results of the simulations with references from various authors; that the geometries proposed by various authors specialised in this subject are compared; that a study of a commercial catalogue is carried out by the means of Finite Element Method, thus obtaining a better knowledge of said catalogue; and that a Design of Experiments is carried out with the Taguchi method, understanding the relevance of certain parameters in the mechanical behaviour of the gears
