Si bien crecimiento urbano es un proceso normal relacionado con el crecimiento de la población y de sus actividades, este plantea cuestiones de definición y escala fundamentales para su sostenibilidad y consecuentemente, en la gestión de su desarrollo . En este sentido, los estudios que hemos ido desarrollando estos diez últimos años han ido demostrando no solamente la pertinencia de la escala metropolitana para la aproximación del medio urbano sino también como los cambios en la manera de habitar y vivir el territorio metropolitano español han ido poniendo en tela de juicio el modelo mediterráneo de construir y pensar la ciudad. En este marco, considerando el fenómeno urbano desde una perspectiva
sistémica, multiescalar y dinámica, se propone analizar la dinámica territorial de las 44 áreas metropolitanas utilizando para ello las informaciones producidas por el CORINE Land Cover entre 1990 y 2006. Dicha lectura territorial de las estructuras espaciales metropolitanas permite identificar y discutir de forma sistemática los procesos de crecimiento y cambios operados con el fin de demostrar la diversidad de patrones territoriales.
If urban growth is a normal process relating with population growth and its activities, it raises some questions of scale definition for its sustainability and consequently for the management of its development. In this way, the studies we have been developing in the last ten years have shown not only the relevance of the metropolitan scale for the approximation of the urban environment but also how the changes in the way of inhabiting and living the spanish metropolitan territory have been called into question the Mediterranean model of building and thinking the city. In this context, considering the urban phenomenon as a systemic, multiscale and dynamic view, we intends to explore the territorial dynamics of the 44 metropolitan areas using the information produced by the CORINE Land Cover between 1990 and 2006. This territorial reading of the spatial structures of metropolitan areas allow us to identify and discuss growth and changes processes in order to demonstrate the diversity of territorial patterns.
