The laboratory LEGI is involved in a project dealing with biofilter modelling. Experimental investigations have already been performed on a laboratory scale pilot. To complete these experiments, a deeper knowledge of the biofilm composition and structure is needed. In particular, an understanding of the evolution of the respective fractions of bacteria cells and EPS in the biofilm for different hydrodynamic conditions is required. The subject consists of devising the experimental protocol to allow the extraction of the different components in the biofilm (EPS, cells) and then quantitative measurements of these components will be taken. The protocol will be first tested on batch cultures and then on biofilms grown in a micro-channel under various hydrodynamic conditions. For these later experiments, additional testing on the biofilm shape will be carried out. Finally, the protocols will be tested on the laboratory scale pilot in order to better understand the biofilter behaviour under different operating conditions.
