Abstract
This work is the outcome of a study that began with my first visit to the island of Ibiza in 1989 and evolved over a period of more than twenty years through fieldwork and drawing.
The study of rural architecture calls for a series of previous considerations about the raison d’être of the operation and the modalities of reading and of approach.
In the case of Ibiza, these considerations are even more necessary; many factors have contributed to creating an air of myth about its white houses that has to be analysed.
In “Mediterranean Architecture,” and, in our case, in the rural house of Ibiza, the architects
of the Modern Movement found confirmation of many of their axioms.
Onto these white peasant houses they projected the aesthetic values of purist architecture (the flat roof, pure volumes, whiteness), and functional values, too: growth through successive additions, heliothermal orientation, etc.
Existing studies on the subject have studied the rural house mostly as an “isolated” object.
