In the last decades, Spain has experienced an increase in the number of students graduating in industrial engineering. The project aims to understand the market, define a methodology to evaluate the existing competition and perform a case study. First steps of the project will involve gathering information that allows stablishing a base for further parts of the study. Main topics will be the definition of market competition, the description of geographical accessibility and elaborating a description of the Spanish market of studies in industrial engineering – focusing on the students’ habits on daily travelling to the university and the sources of information that will be used to study competition. Once a solid basis has been built, the main indicators of geographical accessibility and competition will be presented. At this point, it will be important to analyze the Spanish market in order to make a solid proposal of the indicators that will be used in the case study. Finally, the case study will be carried out. In order to do so, a database will have to be generated from the sources consulted in the first steps. Then, a methodology that allows performing calculations of accessibility and competition will be developed. It is important to remark that Excel will be the main program used for the calculations – not only because of its good interface but also due to the possibility to use web mapping services to evaluate accessibility. Other statistical calculations will be performed when possible with Minitab and, only when a more powerful tool is needed to extract information, SPAD will be used with the help of a researcher. Once all calculations have been executed, most relevant results will be plotted in a map so that a visual infographic is obtained and a final discussion can easily be performed. To conclude, it is important to state once again that the main goal of this project is to understand and measure the competitive situation in the market. However, many new studies could be born from the present study in order to evaluate the effect of competition in the universities or even make a proposal that enhances competition in the national market.
