Abstract
This project focuses on the aerodynamic design of a RC model airplane for the SAE Aero Design
competition of 2016. It solely includes the aerodynamic design, thus, no structural / mechanical
analysis nor manufacturing process are described.
The SAE Aero Design is a collegiate competition based on designing, building and flying and airplane
with the highest payload possible.
The aerodynamic design defines the shape of the airplane and its external components: wing,
fuselage and tail. Detailed analysis is conducted to estimate the lift and drag forces, which determine
the performance in flight.
The main objective is to design an airplane to win the competition, hence, the payload lifted by the
airplane is the relevant parameter to maximize. The project aims to develop a design capable of lifting
a minimum gross weight of 22 kg.
The project outcome shows the design of an airplane capable of lifting more than 22 kg of gross
weight.
Theoretical and empirical equations and analysis are used along the design project to come up with
the promising final results.
