This project presents the concept and design of a 2-port reconfigurable microwave discriminator, main component of a 2-bit reconfigurable frequency measurement system. The reconfigurable frequency measurement system allows identification of any unknown signal in the frequency range from 30 to 40 GHz. The microwave discriminator is the component that performs the frequency identification function within the receiver. This receiver is implemented from the combination of uniplanar technology and radio frequency microelectromechanical systems (RF-MEMS). The microwave discriminator is formed by a MEMS 180º phase shifter, a power divider which also acts as a power combiner, a cpw-slotline transition and a reference line; all these components are integrated on a quartz substrate. The 180º phase shifter is implemented with MEMS technology, which will provide reconfigurability and allow to obtain a 180 degrees phase shift. This design is developed by using a slotline transmission line. This phase shifter is the main component of a microwave discriminator. The power divider is made with coplanar transmission lines (CPW) and it uses a two stage Wilkinson power divider. The divisor function it's to distribute equally between the output ports, the power that the discriminator receives through its input port. The output ports are connected with the phase shifter and the reference line. Finally, the CPW-slotline transition is necessary to connect the phase shifter with the power divider, because both components are designed with different transmission lines. The technologies used during the development of this device allow the circuit to be more compact and smaller, to consume less power and to be easier to manufacture compared to bulky instantaneous frequency measurement techniques.
