Embedding images in partially encrypted JPEG images

Abstract

This thesis presents an algorithm and implementation to embed images into partially encrypted JPEG images by combining the information of both images. These partially encrypted JPEG images have been encrypted using the algorithm presented the paper P3 [1]. The P3 algorithm aims to preserve privacy and control over all the images we upload to the photo-sharing services providers (PSPs) and defines an algorithm and a system to achieve this. Moreover once developed and tested the embedding algorithm, the results of Mean square error (MSE) comparing the host image and output image show a large variance of results. To determine which are the images that combine better and lead to less MSE this thesis proposes a model to estimate the resulting error between the output and the host image. The model is based on a statistical representation of the images and leads to results that have good correlation with the actual MSE. The algorithm and model will allow future works to design images with concrete characteristics to minimize the error and different implementations of the system.

Aquesta tesis presenta un algoritme per incrustar imatges en imatges JPEG parcialment encriptades combinant la informació d’ambdues imatges. Les imatges JPEG han estat encriptades utilitzant els algoritmes del paper P3 [1]. Els objectius d’aquest algoritme són permetre als usuaris que penjant imatges a internet mantenir el control i privacitat. D’altra banda, un cop desenvolupat i testejat l’algoritme els resultats en termes d’error quadràtic mig entre la imatge host i la resultant són molt diversos anant de valors molt petits a valors molt grams. Per poder determinar quines són les imatges que fan que l’error sigui més petit aquesta tesis presenta un model per estimar l’error entre la imatge host i la resultant. El model proposa una representació estadística de les imatges i al testejar-lo s’ha obtingut una gran correlació amb el cas real. Tant l’algoritme com el model permetran en futurs treballs dissenyar les imatge amb unes característiques determinades per minimitzar l’error amb diferents implementacions dels sistema.

Esta tesis presenta un algoritmo para incrustar imágenes en imágenes JPEG parcialmente encriptados combinando la información de ambas imágenes. Las imágenes han sido encriptadas utilizando los algoritmos propuestos en el artículo P3 [1]. Los objetivos de este algoritmo son, permitir a los usuarios que colgando imágenes en internet mantener el control y privacidad. Por otra parte, una vez desarrollado y testeado el algoritmo los resultados en términos de error cuadrático medio entre la imagen host y la resultante son muy diversos yendo de valores muy pequeños a valores muy grandes. Para poder determinar cuáles son las imágenes que hacen que el error sea menor esta tesis presenta un modelo para estimar el error entre la imagen host y la resultante. El modelo propone una representación estadística de las imágenes y al testearlo se ha obtenido una gran correlación con el caso real. Tanto el algoritmo como el modelo permitirán en futuros trabajos diseñar imagen con unas características determinadas para minimizar el error con diferentes implementaciones del sistema.
