The applicability of concepts from the theory of critical phenomena and phase transitions to complex systems (in relation with the edge of chaos hypothesis) is discussed. Different types of phase transitions are defined and their importance in generating fractal structures and optimal information transfer are stressed. Several examples from ecology, computation, evolution and social behavior are discussed. Some general consequences are outlined.
