dc.description.abstract | In the early twentieth century sports stadiums became referents of the local or national identity. The fifties were a key moment in the construction of large sporting facilities such as Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro built in 1950 or Chamartin Stadium finished in 1947 and expanded again in 1954. These Stadiums became the immediate reference for the project of the new Barcelona Stadium, which aspired to become “the best Stadium in the world”. The new Stadium would replace Les Corts one and was the main objective of the president Francesc Miró-Sans Casacuberta, elected in 1953. Francesc Mitjans Miró was the architect of this project for a stadium for 150.000 spectators. Today seems really important to remember the context and claim the pioneering original project done by Francesc Mitjans in the fifties when the Fútbol Club Barcelona is discussing the new extension of the stadium. |
