La Casa Escofet: mosaics per als interiors 1900

Abstract

L’exposició “La Casa Escofet, Mosaics per als interiors:1900” realitzada al Col•legi d’Aparelladors i inaugurada el 27 de noviembre de 2008, il•lustra els trenta primers anys de l’empresa, entre 1886 i 1916. La producció de la Casa Escofet, fundada l’any 1886 per Jaume Escofet i Milà, s’exposa per mitjà dels catàlegs de mosaic hidràulic realitzat durant aquests anys. Els terres són una metàfora de les catifes per als interiors dels habitatges de l’Eixample barceloní i de molts altres indrets del nostre país. La cultura del fundador, provinent d’una nissaga pagesa, era la comuna a la personalitat emprenedora que caracteritza la Catalunya del segle XIX. Com remarca Jaume Vicens Vives a Notícia de Catalunya, els valors eren: la casa, l’eina i la feina, la cultura del treball i de l’ofici. El procés de fabricació del mosaic hidràulic era molt complex i requeria un ofici de virtuós per assolir l’excel•lència del material. Jaume Escofet fou un gran coneixedor de l’ofici i va posar a punt la necessària infraestructura industrial. Si calia una capacitat industrial amb el primor de l’ofici, també calia transcendir el material del mosaic, el morter, mitjançant la simbiosi amb les arts. Fou l’època d’esplendor del Modernisme quan s’inicià l’empresa Escofet, des de bon començament en Jaume Escofet i, a partir de 1905, el seu nebot Emili Farré i Escofet que el va rellevar al capdavant de l’empresa, van entendre que era fonamental vincular la qualitat del material amb l’aportació dels millors dibuixants, pintors i arquitectes. La feliç simbiosi entre art i ofici, entre arquitectura i indústria donà lloc a un material que excel•lia la tècnica i esdevenia el mirall de l’evolució de les arts.

The exhibition “La Casa Escofet, Mosaics per als interiors:1900” (the Escofet Company, mosaics for interiors: 1900) which was inaugurated at the Col•legi d’Aparelladors (Association of Architectural Engineers) on 27 November 2008, shows the company’s first thirty years, from 1886 to 1916. The products manufactured by the Escofet Company, which was founded in 1886 by Jaume Escofet i Milà, are displayed in its catalogues of hydraulic mosaic produced during these years. The floors, which have the appearance of carpets, were designed for the homes in the Eixample district of Barcelona and other parts of the country. The philosophy of the founder, a country man, is typical of many entrepreneurs living in 19th-century Catalonia. Jaume Vicens Vives in Notícia de Catalunya, described his values as those of: home, tools and work, the culture of work and craftsmanship. The manufacturing process for hydraulic mosaics was extremely complex and highly-skilled craftsmen were required to achieve a quality product. Jaume Escofet had extensive knowledge of this craft and incorporated all the necessary industrial infrastructure into it. He not only combined industrial expertise with the craftsman’s delicate touch but also turned the material (mortar) into a work of art. The Escofet Company was founded during the flourishing of the Art Nouveau period. From its beginnings under the management of Jaume Escofet and, from 1905 on, under the leadership of his nephew, Emili Farré i Escofet, the company understood the importance of combining quality materials with the work of the finest draftsmen, painters and architects. The happy marriage of art and craft, architecture and industry, produced the finest examples of the technique, reflecting the developments in the different artistic movements of that time.
