GIES - Geofísica i Enginyeria Sísmica
The group's aims are research, outreach, training and results transfer in fields related to geophysics and earthquake engineering.

Las herramientas SIG en el análisis de vulnerabilidad y escenarios de riesgo sísmico
(UNEX, 2003)
Conference report
Open AccessAn integrated GIS-based analysis (using ArcView GIS) is performed in order to estimate risk scenarios for EMS-98 seismic intensities in Barcelona (Spain), according to a methodology developed within the Risk-UE Project of ... -
Modelling nighttime air temperature from remote sensing imagery and GIS data
(International Society for Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE), 2021)
Conference report
Restricted access - publisher's policyThe estimation of the Earth's surface temperature (LST) from the infrared thermal radiation (TIR) emitted by the Earth detected by means of remote sensing has allowed a giant leap in climate analysis. The specialized ... -
Rainfall regime trends at annual and monthly scales in Catalonia (NE Spain) and indications of CO2 emissions effects
(2021-09-16)
Article
Open AccessThe pluviometric regime in the Western Mediterranean and concretely in Catalonia (NE Spain) is characterised by irregular amounts at monthly and annual scales, sometimes with copious short episodes causing foods and, ... -
Acquisition and processing of buildings’ vibrations using a Real-Aperture Radar, a non-invasive method
(2018)
Conference report
Restricted access - publisher's policyIn this paper, a simplified non-invasive method to diagnose the safety state of buildings is tested. The method is based in remote sensing measurements of the natural vibrations of actual buildings using an interferometric ... -
New capacity and energy based damage index
(2018)
Conference report
Open AccessNon-linear dynamic analysis and the damage index of Park-Ang have been often used to assess expected seismic damage to a structure. Depending on the size of the structure and the duration of the record, the computational ... -
Detection of damage using temporal variation in natural frequencies and principal component analysis
(2020-11)
Article
Open AccessDetection of structural damage is an important issue. Some techniques require knowledge of the undamaged state or in-depth knowledge of the construction materials used. The application of principal component analysis to ... -
Fractal behaviour of distances between consecutive aftershocks: the examples of Landers, Northridge and Hector Mine Southern California mainshocks
(2020-08-13)
Article
Open AccessDistances between consecutive aftershocks are analysed by means of mono- and multifractal theory with the aim of quantifying the complexity of the physical mechanism governing them, as well as their predictability and ... -
Autoregressive process of monthly rainfall amounts in Catalonia (NE Spain) and improvements on predictability of length and intensity of drought episodes
(Wiley, 2021-01)
Article
Open AccessAdvantages offered by a pluviometric network in Catalonia (NE Spain) have permitted a detailed analysis of the two primary results derived from the autoregressive ARIMA process applied to monthly rainfall amounts. The first ... -
Evolution of the multifractal parameters along different steps of a seismic activity: The example of Canterbury 2000–2018 (New Zealand)
(2020-11-05)
Article
Open AccessThe multifractal detrended fluctuation algorithm is applied to a series of distances and elapsed times between consecutive earthquakes recorded along the years 2000–2018 in the Canterbury region (New Zealand). The time ... -
Multifractal structure of the monthly rainfall regime in Catalonia (NE Spain): Evaluation of the non-linear structural complexity
(Institute of Physics (IOP), 2020-07-08)
Article
Open AccessThe complex non-linear regime of the monthly rainfall in Catalonia (NE Spain) is analyzed by means of the reconstruction fractal theorem and the multifractal detrended fluctuation analysis algorithm. Areas with a notable ... -
Characterization of standardised heavy rainfall profiles for Barcelona city: clustering, rain amounts and intensity peaks
(2020-07-09)
Article
Open AccessStandardized heavy rainfall profiles may contribute to a best knowledge concerning flash floods, ground erosion and runoff. Taking advantage of the rain rate gauges network of Barcelona city and applying a short integration ... -
GPR spectra for monitoring asphalt pavements
(Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute (MDPI), 2020-06)
Article
Open AccessGround Penetrating Radar (GPR) is a prospecting method frequently used in monitoring asphalt pavements, especially as an optimal complement to the defection test that is commonly used for determining the structural condition ...
