Abstract
Satellite remote sensing has become a valuable tool for coastal monitoring due to its extensive coverage, frequent updates, and cost-effective access to publicly available satellite imagery. Monitoring the coastal environment is essential, and the shoreline, identified through satellite remote sensing, is a key indicator. This work aimed to enhance the shoreline extraction process and the megacusps characterization using Sentinel-2 imagery. To achieve this, we improved an existing geo-tool developed a set of new tools to automate the extraction process, enhance adaptability for large datasets, and improve accuracy, particularly in areas affected by cloud cover and within diverse coastal environments. The results demonstrate robust performance of the improved and developed tools, which facilitate the shoreline extraction and the megacusps characterization in any sandy coastal area using Sentinel-2 imagery. These geo-tools enable the generation of new open data from available open geospatial datasets, thereby enhancing accessibility for a diverse range of users. The web mapping interface was designed to visualize shorelines, the presence / absence of megacusps and their key attributes, and the shoreline temporal evolution.
