Abstract
The evaluation of environmental impacts of geotechnical structures is as relevant as economic and technical requirements, all of which are part of a proper sustainability assessment. A common method to quantify the environmental impact of structures is the life cycle assessment (LCA). By quantifying the impact of production, construction, transportation, maintenance, and demolition stages, LCA methods provide single score evaluations which simplify the choice between different solutions that perform the same function. Several commercial and open-source LCA tools are available, all of which can use different dataset for environmental inventories as well as different environmental impact calculation methods. Reinforced soil structures (RSSs) have proven to be resilient and reliable solutions. Studies found in the literature demonstrate the reduced environmental impact of RSSs compared to other traditional solutions, such as cantilever walls. The present study evaluates the difference in LCA results for two different types of RSSs using two commercially available LCA software (SimaPro and OneClickLCA). Results serve as a reference for the selection of LCA tools for geotechnical structures.
