Les persones que tenen cura dels animals són majoritàriament dones, tant a dins de les entitats protectores, les famílies, com als espais públics i comunitaris. En el cas de les gateres, la proporció de dones és, si fa o no fa, 9/1. Entre els gats de carrer i les dones s’ha establert un tipus de relació particular de les que ambdós se’n beneficien. Les diferents administracions han de prendre consciència de “l’espai dels gats de carrer” i “l’espai de les dones que en prenen cura” és un mateix espai que ha de sortir de la clandestinitat. La competència sobre els animals en via pública és dels ajuntaments, però només establint col·laboracions amb dones altruistes es pot fer el que cal. L’aplicació rigorosa de la ciència veterinària, polítiques públiques i de maneig ètic de les poblacions, permet transformar la figura marginal de “l’alimentadora” en una “gestora de poblacions felines”. Aquestes, dones per amor als gats, assoleixen unes capacitats, unes eines, unes relacions i uns rols que les beneficien com a indivídues, com a col·lectiu i com a membres de la societat. Tot plegat gràcies a l’afecte, i la sensibilitat, cap a individus d’una altra espècie que mereixen ser respectats i atesos com s’escau.
The people who care for animals are mostly women, both within animal protection charities, families, and in public and community spaces. In the case of community cats, the proportion of women is approximately 9/1. Street cats and women have established a particular kind of relationship that both benefit from. The various administrations must to realize that the space of street cats and the space of women who take care of them must come out of secrecy. Official care over animals in public is the responsibility of local authorities, but only by establishing collaborations with altruistic women can we do what is necessary. The rigorous application of veterinary science, public policies and the ethical management of populations, allows the marginal figure of "the feeder" to be transformed into a "feline population manager". These women, because of love for cats, achieve skills, tools, relationships and roles that benefit them as individuals, collectives and members of society. All this is due to the affection, and sensitivity, of individuals of another species who deserve to be respected and cared for as appropriate.
