A study of data-driven decision making in the insurance industry

Abstract

En aquest estudi es tractarà de explicar el potencial que el big data té en el món de les asseguradores. S’iniciarà amb una mica d’història per entendre la progressió que ha tingut la indústria. Això ajudarà a projectar com pot progressar aquesta industria en el futur i a posar-nos en context. Una vegada presentat el tema, entrarem a explicar com el big data s’aplica avui en dia al mon de l’assegurança. I serà en aquest punt on estudiarem una aplicació en concret, un nou producte que es generalitzarà en el sector anomenat ‘usage-based Insurance’. Es tracta d’un producte on el preu no s’estableix per paràmetres com fins ara, sinó que s’estableix a base de data que cada usuari envia a l’asseguradora. Com es veurà, està previst que el seu ús creixi exponencialment en gairebé totes les regions del mon. Una vegada presentat el tema, es pesarà a fer una explicació de tots els actors que componen aquest sistema, que té certes diferències respecte al model tradicional. Acabada l’explicació detallada del sistema, es passarà a fer diferents anàlisis per concloure quina és la situació en la que es troba i quin potencial té per el futur, fent menció i explicant als principals problemes i oportunitats que té aquest nou sistema. L’estudi aporta principalment un estudi esquemàtic i complert que fins ara no s’havia fet acompanyat de diferents anàlisis i una teoria d’evolució futura. Per acabar, es mira de lligar el progrés d’aquesta nova i particular modalitat d’assegurança amb la industria aseguradora al complet.

In this study it will be explained the potential that big data has in the insurance industry. It will be started by some history to better understand the evolution of the business. This will help understand how the industry can evolve in the future. Once the topic has been presented, it will be explained how big data is used nowadays in the insurance industry. At this point it will be presented a particular application that will be the main focus for the rest for the study: usage-based insurance. It is a new insurance product where the price is not set like until now, but thanks to data sent by every user to the company. As it will be seen, it is forecasted that their use will grow exponentially in almost everywhere. Once presented the topic, it will be explained all the actors present in the system, which vary from the traditional one. Finished the detailed explanation of the system, we will move to make different analysis to find what is the current situation of this new product and the potential that it has. This study has the particular characteristic of packing a detailed but schematic explanation of the concept followed by different analysis and a theory of future evolution. To finish, the results of this particular product are generalized to the rest of the industry
