L'objectiu del grup és l'estudi de material d'interès històric, arqueològic, artístic i de patrimoni cultural, utilitzant tècniques d'anàlisi química i grans equips científics.
A partir del coneixement de la composició dels materials es poden explicar els mecanismes químics dels processos d'envelliment i alteració, cosa que és d'alt interès en el camp de la conservació i restauració i també obtenir informació sobre tecnologies de producció, origen geogràfic, intercanvis comercials, etc..

L'interès de la recerca es basa en adequar les tècniques als problemes proposats, i en l'optimització dels mètodes d'anàlisi, així com de la utilització que se'n pugui fer dels resultats en altres camps del coneixement.
Es disposa de CE, HPLC i FTIR, i s'utilitzen altres tècniques com: Difracció de Raig X XRD, Microscòpia Electrònica SEM-EDS... una part important de la recerca es recolza en aprofitar les avantatges que presenten diferents tècniques acoblades a la Llum Sincrotró.
