Abstract
The following study is focused on the analysis of the functioning of the Drag Reduction System (DRS), a device located in the rear wing in charge of reducing the drag force on the car, on a Formula One single-seater. Inside the Formula One’s world, we are carrying out an aerodynamic study, one of the most complexes fields in the motorsport. The main objectives of our study are to check if the DRS is still as effective as before the change of the technical regulations, how it works from the moment it is closed until it is opened as well as the 3D design of a prototype for the study. Our first step will be to design the CAD ad-hoc model, which will be used to carry out the fluid dynamic simulations, thus being able to study the aerodynamic behaviour of the model. The project studies the aerodynamic phenomena that affect Formula One cars, as well as the aerodynamic components of cars and their evolution throughout history. Thanks to these concepts, plus the knowledge related to CFD, it is possible to develop the simulations, whose conditions and procedures will be explained in detail. The main data to be studied will be the velocity and pressure distributions, as well as the aerodynamic coefficients. These values may allow us to understand the effect of the air on the Formula One car and the effect of the DRS when activated in the different possible situations. In addition, it will be possible to observe the loss of aerodynamic load when a single-seater is at a distance of 10 metres from another vehicle. Finally, the conclusions will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of using the DRS, its effect at different opening angles and the effect of the slipstream and its consequences on the DRS. In the end, it will try to answer the question that many fans are asking: Is DRS an abusive or, on the contrary, inefficient overtaking system?
