dc.description.abstractIn this thesis we focus on computational modelling of flexoelectricity for the design of metamaterials exhibiting apparent piezoelectricity. To do this, we introduce generalized periodicity conditions in an existing finite element code. Given that flexoelectricity is modelled by a set of fourth order PDEs, imposing generalized periodicity conditions requires not only imposing conditions on nodal values, but also on faces, to account for high-order interface conditions.
