Abstract
The gauging of propellants in upper stages or
satellites in orbit is a challenging task due to the
absence of buoyancy, which makes liquids and
gases adopt a large variety of configurations. The
new Spectral Mass Gauging technique consists in
the determination of the volume of liquid in a tank
from the spectral analysis of the frequency
response of the tank walls to an acoustic excitation.
This approach is independent of the liquid-gas
configuration in the tank, making especially
interesting with respect to other existing techniques
for mass gauging. During an experimental
campaign carried out at the ZARM drop tower in
Germany, the Spectral Mass Gauging technique
was evaluated for the first time in microgravity
conditions. Different scenarios characterized by the
type of acoustic actuation and data acquisition were
considered. We present the Spectral Mass Gauging
technique and results obtained in the lab and in the
microgravity campaign, which confirm it as a
promising approach for propellant gauging in space.
