The Industrial Waste Treatment and Separation Group, deemed a ?consolidated research group? by the Generalitat of Catalonia, is part of the Chemical Engineering Department of the Technical University of Catalonia. Its main objectives are the development of techniques for the separation, recovery and elimination of metals and organic pollutants, the development of analytical methods and new sensors for the monitoring of physical and chemical parameters of environmental and biomedical relevance, and the modelling and evaluation of the behaviour of wastes in the environment.

Characterization of natural Yemeni zeolites as powder sorbents for ammonium valorization from domestic waste water streams using high rate activated sludge processes
(2018-02-23)
Article
Open AccessBACKGROUND In this study three natural Yemeni zeolites (NZ1, NZ2 and NZ3) having major minerals such as clinoptilolite and mordenite, were evaluated as low cost sorbents for the removal and recovery of ammonium ... -
Experimental and theoretical study of nanofiltration of weak electrolytes: SO4 2–/HSO4 –/H+ system
(2018-03-15)
Article
Open Access© 2018 Elsevier B.V. Over recent years, nanofiltration (NF) has been considered as an effective way to improve processing steps in metallurgical and hydrometallurgy applications dealing with mixtures of metal ions in ... -
Design and characterization of greener sunscreen formulations based on mica powder and a biosurfactant extract
(2018-01-05)
Article
Open Access© 2018 Elsevier B.V. The mining industry produces an earth-derived silicate mineral, called mica, which is included in many cosmetic formulations. Mica minerals produce a shimmering effect on the skin and simultaneously ... -
Application of nanofiltration for acidic waters containing rare earth elements: Influence of transition elements, acidity and membrane stability
(2018-03-15)
Article
Open Access© 2017 Elsevier B.V. Acid mine drainage (AMD) is considered the main environmental problem in mining operation due to its acidity, metal content (Fe, Al, Zn, Cu) and onerous associated treatment cost. However, the presence ... -
Application of selectrodialysis for the removal of as from metallurgical process waters: Recovery of Cu and Zn
(2017-12-19)
Article
Open AccessIn this work, selectrodialysis (SED) was used to separate arsenic (As(V)) from copper (Cu(II)) and (Zn(II)) of acidic metallurgical process streams by integrating non-selective and selective membranes. The separation process ... -
Phosphate recovery from treated municipal wastewater using hybrid anion exchangers containing hydrated ferric oxide nanoparticles
(2017-08-07)
Article
Open AccessBACKDROUND This study presents the evaluation of two ion exchangers (granular and fibrous) impregnated with nanoparticles of hydrated ferric oxide (HFO) as selective sorbents for phosphate recovery from aqueous solutions. ... -
Integration of foreigners in Egypt: the relief of Amenhotep II shooting arrows at a copper ingot and related scenes
(2017)
Article
Open AccessThe relief of Amenhotep II shooting arrows at a copper ingot target has often been considered as propaganda of the king’s extraordinary strength and vigour. However, this work proposes that the scene took on additional ... -
Influence of the interpellet space to the Instant Release Fraction determination of a commercial UO2 Boiling Water Reactor Spent Nuclear Fuel
(Elsevier, 2018-02)
Article
Open AccessThe contact of the coolant with the fuel pin during irradiation produces a gradient of temperature in the fuel pellet that segregates the radionuclides (RN) depending on its volatility and reactivity. This segregation ... -
Characterisation of organic foulants on full-scale UF membranes during filtration, backwash and chemical cleaning episodes
(2017)
Article
Open AccessUnderstanding organic fouling on ultrafiltration (UF) membranes during water filtration and cleaning episodes has become one of the major factors driving UF technology forward. The aim of this study was to quantify and ... -
Recovery of germanium from leach solutions of fly ash using solvent extraction with various extractants
(Elsevier, 2018-01)
Article
Open AccessThe solvent extraction of germanium and some heavy metals by commercial tri-octyl/decyl amine (Alamine 336), N-methyl-N, N-dioctyl chloride (Aliquat 336) and phosphine oxide (Cyanex 923) has been studied. In each extraction ... -
Experimental and modelling studies of neodymium solvent extraction from chloride media with methyl-tri(octyl/decyl)ammonium oleate ionic liquid diluted in kerosene
(Elsevier, 2017-12-01)
Article
Open AccessA study of the solvent extraction process of Nd(III) from chloride solutions has been carried out using an ionic liquid (AliOle) prepared from Aliquat 336 (Methyl-tri(octyl/decyl)ammonium chloride) and Oleic Acid. The IL ... -
