Abstract
Green Waste Recycling Programme is one of the projects that an international group of students works on during the European Project Semester. The project focuses on the Monocrom company which produces diode laser cores. As all produced elements are small, high precision is very important. The most important thing they do in the company itself is assemble the diode, conduction tests on them and create prototypes. As a result, the company does not produce a high amount of end products on their own. The company’s aim is to decrease production of waste material during the production process and improve the process itself. The main goal is to dispose all waste materials in eco-friendly way in order not to harm the environment. Currently, Monocrom has difficulties with disposing four different types of waste materials: - Emulsion used to cool down the metal cutting machine. - Liquid used in process called gold plating. - Small amounts of other chemicals. - Metal wastes, such as aluminium and copper chips. Initially, it was believed that every problem requires a different approach. In the process of researching and finding solutions, the team came up with some common ideas. First of all, the cooling fluid was tested to find out if it is possible to use it for longer period of time. In order to check it, three experiments which were conducted: pH-value measurements, concentration measurement and nitrite-value. The results showed that it is not necessary to change the emulsion as often as the company does it at the moment. It means lower demand of the fluid what results in decrease in costs. Secondly, the team managed to design find proper storage place for all. The solution includes fire resistance cabinet with drip containers and suitably labelled plastic canisters. For the metal a 300l plastic container is suggested so that the company can store it for a longer time. The fact that the company can store more has the consequence that they save money and fuel because the collector comes less often. Last but not least, the group checked all the companies that pick up one of the waste materials. In this way the company is sure that their wastes are being recycled or dealt with in an ecofriendly way.
