Abstract
When talking about contemporary architecture in Japan, especially regarding the house and the idea of everyday living, it is very relevant to focus on the contribution of Kazuo Shinohara (1925-2006), for several reasons.
Firstly, because his influence in many Japanese studios today is very big, even if it is not widely or openly acknowledged. There is a genealogy of sorts that connects his work with, for example, that of Toyo Ito, Sejima, and down to many young and not-so young offices producing compelling work nowadays.
Secondly, because he stated very early in his career: "House is Art", which is a bold and revolutionary statement, even if we take into account that it was made in 1961, a time of many social convulsions in Japan and elsewhere. But it was also the time when consumerism started taking over almost any imaginable aspect of society, like an unavoidable consequence of capitalist materialism.
