The group studies power quality, i.e. the deviations of voltage and/or current from the ideal situation of a sine wave that is constant in magnitude and frequency. Basically, three types of power quality disturbances are studied: harmonic distortion, voltage sags and three-phase unbalance. Harmonic distortion is produced when voltage and current waveforms are non-sinusoidal but periodic, due to the presence of nonlinear loads in electrical power systems. Voltage sags are short-duration reductions in rms voltage caused by short-circuits in the system. Three-phase unbalance is produced when the three-phase voltages and currents are not symmetrical and/or balanced due to the presence of unbalanced loads in electrical power systems.

Symmetrical and unsymmetrical voltage sag effects on the three-phase synchronous machine stability
(2009)
Conference lecture
Open AccessThis paper focuses on the effects of voltage sags, both symmetrical and unsymmetrical, on the three-phase Synchronous Machine (SM). Voltage sags on SM cause speed variations, current and torque peaks and hence may cause ... -
