This article deals with the experience developed in the Sierra Menera open-cast iron mines in Ojos Negros (Teruel), where a programme of artistic interventions opened the way to a new identity for the territory and a change of function after the end of the mining activity. Under the slogan Art, Industry and Territory, several meetings were called, bringing together artists who displayed their works in the mining scenario and specialists in architecture, philosophy, mining, art history, sociology and other disciplines who, together with the participation of the neighbours, debated the future of the exploitation. The repercussion of the activity generated served to guide the future of the installations of the mining area, which led to the Government of Aragon declaring as a Cultural Park, the highest figure of heritage protection in Aragon.
El presente artículo aborda la experiencia desarrollada en las minas de hierro a cielo abierto de Sierra Menera en Ojos Negros (Teruel), donde un programa de intervenciones artísticas abrió el camino hacia una nueva identidad del territorio y un cambio de función después del cese de la actividad extractora. Bajo el lema de Arte, industria y territorio se convocaron varios encuentros en los que se dieron cita artistas que desplegaron sus obras por el escenario minero y especialistas en arquitectura, filosofía, minería, historia del arte, sociología y otras disciplinas que, junto con la participación de los vecinos, debatieron sobre el futuro de la explotación. La repercusión de la actividad generada sirvió para orientar el futuro de las instalaciones del coto minero, hasta el punto de que el Gobierno de Aragón lo declarara Parque Cultural, la más alta figura de protección patrimonial de Aragón.
