Abstract
The urgent need of changes in the human behavior regarding the environment is an
exploding area of investigation, especially for material sciences. The reduction of
carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions is one of the main investigation topic because of its
direct impact on the environment and human being. As one of the greenhouse gas
(GHG), its abondant presence on earth rises the general temperatures leading to
major environmental and human disruption. An important source of CO2 emissions
is the manufacturing of cement. From the extraction of the raw material, the energy used by the kiln for the clinkerisation or in the transportation to its end of life;
combined by its world wide enormous consumption mostly for construction applications, the cement considerably impacts the environment. Alkali-activated cements
(AACs) were proposed as an alternatives to this Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC),
providing at least as good mechanical properties while reducing the amount of CO2
emissions and energy consumption by about 50-80 % [1]. However, the cost of the
raw materials for the AAC is slowing down its utilisation, leading to further investigations on the precursor. The use of weathered bottom ash (WBA) is presented as
an option for lowering the cost and the environmental impact of the AAC. Provided
by the weight reduction at about 80 % of urban waste residues by incineration, then
exposed to environmental conditions for stabilisation, it reduces both landfill and
raw material extraction issues.
In this master’s thesis were conducted preparation and characterizations of samples made with all fractions of WBA, fractions over 8 mm and as partial precursor,
mixing the WBA with metakaolin or PAVAL, two aluminium rich powders. The
results evidenced the effect of a high metal content provided by the smallest fraction of WBA and reducing the mechanical properties by increasing the porosity and
slightly preventing the formation of C-(A)-S-H and N-A-S-H gels, typical AAC reaction products. The high porosity of the cement is linked with the higher original
metal content and is proved to be a main issue for the mechanical properties. However, in fewer quantities, a good aluminium availability can increase the mechanical
properties by slightly favoring the formation of N-A-S-H gel. When the porosity is
low and both gels coexist, the final mechanical properties of the cement are promising for construction applications even though the content of arsenic and antimony
in the leachate could still be an issue to completely replace the OPC.
