¡El libro de arquitectura ha muerto! ¡Viva el libro de arquitectura!

Abstract

In the last years many voices have frivolized with the disappearance of bookstores and paper books. If we look at the data published regularly on the publishing world in Spain, I think we can analyze the situation. As has happened with other professions that have suffered a sudden and marked economic decline, architecture books have experienced a setback in the last 15 years, a setback that, above all, can be observed in the average amount of book purchases per person that has fallen by more than 50%. We are witnessing a paradigm shift in which small publishers are pushing the sector that had been slowed down. Traditional publishers have also made a move and have found new formulas to finance their editions. We are witnessing a moment of transformation and evolution of the architecture book that we had not seen in many years and, therefore, a moment far removed from those pessimistic voices that predicted, and continue to do so, the end of the book, and especially the book of architecture.

Desde hace años se frivoliza con la desaparición de las librerías y de los libros en papel. Si observamos los datos publicados regularmente sobre el mundo editorial en España, creo que podremos analizar su situación. Como ha sucedido con otras profesiones que han sufrido un declive económico repentino y acusado, los libros de arquitectura han experimentado un retroceso en los últimos 15 años, un retroceso que, sobre todo, puede observarse en el importe medio de compra de libros por persona que ha caído un más allá del 50 %. Estamos asistiendo a un cambio de paradigma en el que son las pequeñas editoriales las que están empujando el sector que había quedado ralentizado. Las editoriales tradicionales también han movido ficha y han encontrado nuevas fórmulas para financiar sus ediciones. Asistimos a un momento de transformación y evolución del libro de arquitectura que no habíamos visto en muchos años y, por tanto, a un momento muy alejado de aquellas voces pesimistas que auguraban, y lo siguen haciendo, el fin del libro, y en especial el de arquitectura.
