Abstract
The activities based on the analysis of historical texts help to improve the integral education
of students, while providing them with additional knowledge about the social and scientific
context of the periods involved. Students gain a vision of mathematics not as a final product, but as
a useful, human, interdisciplinary and heuristic science which has been developed by trying to answer
the questions that humanity has posed throughout time with respect to the world around us.
Through our experience as teachers, we have realized that many students have difficulty understanding and handling negative numbers. Accordingly, this paper presents an analysis of some relevant historical texts that deal with negative numbers. On the basis of these texts, classroom activities can be designed with contents related to numbering, which forms part of the numbering and calculation block of the curriculum. In addition, students can work with problem-solving, reasoning and proof processes in these activities, thus addressing connections, communication and representation.
