Abstract
This thesis consists in studying the relation between some atmospheric contaminants hovering in the air and the aircraft engine deterioration. The contaminants can be, among others, sea salt or dust, and commercial aircraft continuously ingest these particles, affecting the engine performance. Then, the idea of this work is to see which particles affect the most. To do so, the first step is to study the available initial data, like the contaminant concentration in the atmosphere. The other important data are the flight trajectories of 4 different A319 aircraft (8 engines) which flew in Europe during 2019. The flight data also provides some engine parameters, such as the exhaust gas temperature (EGT), the fuel consumption (ṁf) and the engine rotational speeds (RPM). Once the data is understood and free of errors, the next step is to find a way of computing the air mass flow rate (ṁ) in a reliable way. Then, the third step is to cross the flight trajectories with the contaminants concentration in order to get the quantity of contaminant ingested. Finally, the idea is to build a statistical model to relate different input variables (including the aerosol ingestion) to the engine degradation parameter, the EGT.
