Instituto Salk: las pandemias como cimientos de la arquitectura

Abstract

En el contexto del Covid-19 nos planteamos cómo abordamos la arquitectura de los edificios de investigación, para que mejoren el trabajo de los científicos, ajustándose a sus necesidades. En 1959 Jonas Salk, un científico biomédico y Louis I. Kahn, un reconocido arquitecto, desarrollaron unos laboratorios que nos sirven de ejemplo para la actualidad: el Instituto Salk. Inspirados por el ritmo sosegado y laborioso del monasterio ellos pusieron en práctica dos objetivos: cubrir las necesidades técnicas que requieren los laboratorios y cuidar la dimensión humana. El Instituto es un espacio planteado para mejorar las relaciones sociales de los trabajadores por medio de la inclusión de espacios de descanso y la especial atención a las zonas comunes. El Instituto cubre una dimensión humana que no siempre se ha tenido en cuenta en la arquitectura. A partir del análisis del Insituto realizaremos una breve incursión en un proyecto actual de laboratorios. Estudiaremos si el actual Campus de investigación de Novartis conserva la atención por el bienestar de los científicos.

In the context of Covid-19, we are asking ourselves how we approach the architecture of research buildings, so that they contribute to improving the work of scientists by adjusting to their needs. In 1959 Jonas Salk, a biomedical scientist, and Louis I. Kahn, a renowned architect, developed laboratories that serve as an example for today: the Salk Institute. Inspired by the calm and laborious rhythm of the monastery, they will implement two objectives: to cover the technical needs required by the laboratories and to take care of the human dimension. The Institute is a space designed to improve the social relations of the workers through the inclusion of rest areas and special attention to the common areas. The Institute covers a human dimension that has not always been considered in architecture. Based on the analysis of the Institute, we will make a brief foray into a current laboratory project. We will study whether the current Novartis Research Campus maintains a focus on human well-being.
