El legado de Archigram en la Bartlett: tres generaciones de arquitecturas especulativas: Archigram, Smout Allen y You+Pea

Abstract

La arquitectura y la ficción han estado siempre estrechamente relacionadas. En contextos de inestabilidad política y agitación social, tienden a emerger propuestas radicales desde el mundo de la arquitectura que desafían las convenciones establecidas y proponen alternativas especulativas a través de imágenes espectaculares. La arquitectura especulativa sigue a día de hoy dando respuestas a las distintas crisis económicas, humanitarias y climáticas, planteando futuros imaginarios desde las nuevas tecnologías digitales.

El presente estudio propone un análisis comparativo entre Archigram, Smout Allen y You+Pea, a través de tres de sus proyectos de arquitectura especulativa (Plug-in City, Liquid Kingdom y London Developers Toolkit, respectivamente). Centrándonos en el concepto, la escala, la representación gráfica y la difusión pretendemos entender de dónde provienen dichas propuestas especulativas y cómo han evolucionado desde el siglo XX, con tal de poder finalmente valorar sus aportaciones a la Arquitectura en su sentido más amplio.

Architecture and fiction have always been closely related. In contexts of political instability and social upheaval, radical proposals tend to emerge from the world of architecture that challenge established conventions and propose speculative alternatives through spectacular images. Speculative architecture continues today to provide answers to the different economic, humanitarian and climatic challenges, proposing imaginary futures through the new digital technologies.

This study proposes a comparative analysis between Archigram, Smout Allen and You+Pea, through three of their speculative architecture projects (Plug-in City, Liquid Kingdom and London Developers Toolkit, respectively). Focusing on concept, scale, graphic representation and communication, we seek to understand where these speculative proposals come from and how they have evolved since the 20th century, in order to finally assess their contributions to Architecture in its broadest sense.
