Abstract
Vehicle developers have increased the awareness in noise since, in the last decades, vehicles are becoming more and more silent. Nowadays vehicles should have comfortable noise levels, so knowing which are the noise sources and how the sources affect the passenger’s perception, is valuable information. Is the NVH (Noise Vibration and Harshness) engineers’ responsibility to develop techniques and methodologies that allow the developers to achieve a better noise feeling of the vehicle. This project presents the methodologies followed to do a proper Airborne Source Quantification (ASQ), which stands for the quantification of the acoustic energy of a source that transmits the noise through the air and not through the vehicle’s structure. To perform the analysis TPA (Transfer Path Analysis) was used, which evaluate the paths that the sources take to reach the targets, in this case, interior of the vehicle. Two different sources were analysed for being able to quantify any type of airborne source and obtained the contribution of the sources to the interior. The firs source to be characterized was the exhaust noise, which can be considered a monopole source, the other source to be analysed was the engine of the vehicle, which consist in a large surface source radiating airborne noise. In the case of the exhaust a classic TPA approach was used, which involves the use of sensors close to the source for the quantification and a response function from the source to the receiver, in this case the passengers, so the source contribution can be analyzed. For the engine airborne source, a non-common approach was used. An engine simulation was built so the results obtained could be compared to the real response of the source. The measurements were performed using uniaxial accelerometers that would measure the source directly and then the response of the source is correlated to the interior using Frequency Response Functions (FRF). The results of the testing will be the contribution of each source to the interior compared with the overall noise. In the case of the engine source, the methodology will be verified by comparing the calculated source to the real measured response of the source.
