Abstract
The study of cities is a broad topic that has been faced in many different ways over the years. To understand a city, it is necessary to keep in mind
the place and time in which it has evolved, but also the social context, which plays a key role in its development. Kaunas is a city in Lithuania that has developed in a very specific historical and geographical context. Its strategic position at the confluence of two rivers and the different historical episodes, together with the will of a society to make a place for itself in the European context, shaped the city as it is known today.
From our geographical area there is very little information about this country. This work seeks to approach the history of this region by studying the urban growth of one of the most important cities in the Baltic. The 19th and 20th centuries were decisive in the formation of cities and many authors have reflected on this. Peter Hall, Kenneth Frampton and Leonardo Benévolo, among others, have served to lay the theoretical foundations of this thesis. Through a formal and historical analysis of three paradigmatic urban fabrics, the maximum understanding of the formation process of the modern Kaunas throughout the 19th and 20th centuries is sought. This vision is complemented by the personal experience of how the city has been experienced by an occasional visitor.
