Abstract
The historical centre of a city is its essence, the part of it with the greatest artistic, architectural and cultural
heritage.
This is due, as its name suggests, to history. Urban areas were strategically chosen by the first settlements, and
have been through, in some cases, wars that have caused irreparable material damage; they have also been
present in the creation and development of several cultures and languages and they saw how, what we now enjoy
as traditions, were established.
Some of these cities have even been affected by uncontrollable natural disasters, where humans have been able
to do nothing but resign themselves to their consequences and recover from them in the best possible way.
One of the cities affected by an adverse weather phenomenon is Lisbon, which has suffered several earthquakes
throughout its history, but it was the one dating back to 1755 that was a turning point in the history of the
Portuguese capital.
An earthquake, followed by a subsequent tsunami and fire, caused the death of a very significant part of the
population and completely demolished everything we now know as the historical centre of Lisbon, also affecting
other Portuguese cities and even, to a lesser extent, other countries.
This project will try to explain the context of the city of Lisbon at the time of the catastrophe, which was the level
of impact of the earthquake and the subsequent fire and tsunami, and how the city was restored after this tragic
natural disaster, projecting a new urban plan that would improve the living conditions of the population and
creating an architecture, the pombaline architecture, which has survived to this day and is part of the essence of
the capital Portuguese.
