Abstract
The aim of this master’s thesis is to make an analysis of the power installed in ships. the analysis is done using the information that is sent by those ships through the automatic identification system (ais) and applying this information to different work methodologies. in the first place, a review of the most relevant maritime organizations that ensure maritime safety and prevention of pollution is made. also, it is explained a set of specific measures to achieve such control, such as the marpol convention or the implementation of the ais system. as the object of study will be the port of barcelona during the month of may 2020, the port traffic indicators throughout the 2020 are discussed. on the other hand, the impact of the covid-19 pandemic is also analyzed according to different segments. using the ais data obtained by the receiver installed in the barcelona school of nautical studies, a model is created with python software. the model is capable of estimating the ship`s installed power and the emissions produced during the study period. for the power calculation, a system is created based on a sequence of empirical equations proposed by different authors. in this sense, the difficulty lies in the limitation of technical information sent by the ships and the search for equations that adapt to these variables. once the power is estimated according to different methods, the values are compared with real data obtained through the ihs-markit database; in this way, it is possible to analyze which methods are most valid. finally, the project includes an estimate of the fuel consumption and the volume of greenhouse gas emissions based on the adaptation of a study published by trozzi, and according to different parameters, such as the type of vessel, type of main or auxiliary engine installed, and percentage of use of these engines according to the phase of navigation.
