The discussion about the possible construction of a new stadium for the Fubol Club Barcelona occupied a preeminent place in the architectural scene of Barcelona in the late 40s and early 50s. In only twenty years, Les Corts’ Stadium doubled its original capacity, reaching 50,000 people. The ambition of the board was to build a stadium for 100,000 people: we could describe the dimension of the problem as unusual in post-autarkic Spain. The new project for the stadium was developed between 1954 and 1957 by the architects Mitjans, Soteras and García Barbón. Mitjans was a neophyte in the leadership of the construction of sports equipment while both Soteras and García Barbón had previous experience in sports projects, although they had never built one. Given the dimension of the problem, it is essential to analyse, in this case, the first part of the project's process. It involves, therefore, the methodology of the skilful work to channel the approach of the problem in all its extension and the study of the possible resolutions of the problem. Thus, the contrast of the case studies consulted for the project with the analysis of the program written by the directive after the previous studies of the project is essential. The case studies used as a work background in the project have been reconstructed based on three documentary bases. The first one is the location of bibliographic lists made by FrancescMitjans. These included a large number of national and international publications of several projects. Once we identify these base materials, the contrast with the publications made by the authors of the stadium is immediate. Besides, it has been possible to identify the elements of a public exhibition organized by the club, based on a comparison of the different international stadium designs and the new stadium's project, with public reports of its authors. As the phrase of De la Sota states, posing the problem and the data involved, the resolution and materiality possibilities. The previous works include the bases of this set of approaches. The identification of these elements allows breaking a particular mythology of the cultural isolation at that moment and the management of the available information. Antonio Fernández Alba states in an article how the few materials received by the authors generate a reaction in local architects quite far from the research spirit identified in this project (La crisis de la Arquitectura Española. 1ª ed. Colección Divulgación Universitaria. Madrid: Cuadernos para el Diálogo 1972. pp. 28-29). Not by accident can we find complementary reflections to the case studies' work in the previous production of the authors, and this concludes in an unusual project and final work, perhaps not yet recognized by architectural criticism. A project, historically destined to suffer an indescribable abuse in its recurrent extensions and shortly condemned to see his roof canopy, one of its most significant elements, demolished, and to have the asymmetric profile of its original design carelessly regularized.
