Abstract
Background. A maintenance plan is a set of activities, whose purpose is to avoid the lack of operability of the installation, in this case, a ship. The actions included are basically administrative, managerial and inspectional. Specifically, this project studies a component of the propulsion equipment of one of Acciona‐Trasmediterránea vessels, the main engines of the ship Zurbarán. This work takes into account the existing environmental legislation and waste management onboard a ship. Results. The Main Engine Maintenance Plan from 2011 to 2015, in accordance with the specifications of the classification society (Lloyd’s Register of Shipping), is the result of this project (in appendix 2, there is the complete plan description week by week). To design this plan, it has been necessary to study the different activities of the present maintenance scheme (activity periodicity, number of annual repetitions of tasks, number of items surveyed, duration of the surveys, and annual maintenance hours). In addition, the ship’s operability (navigation plan, crew’s available hours for maintenance tasks, ship’s available hours in port and reparation stops with the engine not working) has also been analysed. Needless to say, to process the information more easily, every task of the plan has been codified according to a specifically designed code system. Conclusions. Planning the maintenance tasks is of a great importance because it avoids altering the availability of the vessel due to an unscheduled break resulting from any of the items of our installation. All this scheduled maintenance is necessary to ensure the vessel’s navigability and so her efficiency both in terms of time and money, which is essential to write off the capital invested.
