Abstract
Punching shear is a phenomenon in flat slabs caused by concentrated support reactions
inducing a cone shaped perforation starting from the top surface of the slab. Although
generally preceded by flexural failure, punching shear is a brittle failure mode and the
risk of progressive collapse requires a higher safety class in structural design. Usually,
the slab-column connection is moment resistant, so there is transmission of moments
from the column to the slab, especially in three situations: a) in edge columns, b) in
interior columns with different span lengths at both sides and 3) under non
symmetrical load cases. However, no theoretical models based on the concrete
mechanics are available, so most design codes use empirical equations to account for
the eccentricity effects. In addition, few tests on eccentric punching are available. In
this thesis, a data base of punching tests under eccentric loading, available in the
literature, has been created. Furthermore, the Compression Chord Capacity Punching
Strength Model (CCCM), previously adapted to eccentric loading, has been
satisfactorily verified by comparing the predictions with the tests results, the EC2 and
the ACI code.
