Modeling tails and bridges in galaxy interactions with the restricted three body problem

Galaxy interaction is a common feature in our universe but the dynamics behind it is still not fully understood. More data is becoming available lately and every time it is more precise. However, we need mathematical and physical models to understand this new data. In this work we model the interaction between two galaxies with the parabolic restricted three body problem. In a first step, we simulate the effects of the interaction in a disk galaxy doing several particle simulations, obtaining results close to reality. Secondly, with the help of the C-criterion classification we try to understand the relation between the radius of the disks and the formation of galactic structures such as tails and bridges. Finally we use the invariant objects in the circular restricted three body problem in order to understand the dynamics of our simulations. In fact, we are able to explain the formation of tails with the invariant manifolds of Lyapunov orbits around L1.
