Sensory design interventions in hospitals: design as an element of experience, emotion, reflection and healing

Abstract

El cuidado de un paciente require un espacio hospitalario donde ser atendido, medios materiales para realizar el tratamiento, medios humanos para atender sus necesidades y realizar un seguimiento de su evolución, y un entorno agradable que mejore su experiencia hospitalaria. Todo ello tiene como objetivo garantizar su calidad de vida. Este Trabajo de Fin de Máster explora el papel del diseño como herramienta para mejorar la calidad de los entornos hospitalarios, así como las características del entorno natural como recurso para conectar el interior del hospital con el exterior. En la primera parte del proyecto se desarrolla una investigación para conocer las metodologías existentes de humanización de espacios sanitarios. Se distingue entre entorno social y entorno físico y se pone el foco en este último. En la segunda parte del proyecto se propone un sistema de intervenciones de diseño que combina los elementos del entorno natural de los espacios hospitalarios con diferentes herramientas de diseño.

The care of a patient requires a hospital space where they can be attended, material means to carry out the treatment, human means to attend to their needs and monitor their evolution, and a pleasant environment that improves their hospital experience. All this is aimed at ensuring their quality of life. This Master's thesis explores the role of design as a tool to improve the quality of hospital environments, as well as the characteristics of the natural environment as a resource to connect the interior of the hospital with the exterior. In the first part of the project, an investigation is developed to know the existing methodologies of humanization of sanitary spaces. A distinction is made between social and physical environments and the focus is placed on the latter. The second part of the project proposes a system of design interventions that combines the elements of the natural environment of the hospital spaces with different design tools.
