Abstract
The main culprit of the climate emergency that our society is facing, is the emission of Green House gases to the atmosphere, mainly product of industrial human activity. The transportation sector has a strong influence in the emission of GHG, especially road transport which is one of the major emitters of CO2 pollutant. Increasingly, high dense cities are presenting dangerously high air pollution levels, not only harmful for the environment but also for human health (HHH particles).
The aim of this thesis is to study the mobility options and their related emissions for an specific case study; the university campus Diagonal-Besòs in Barcelona, Spain. The study intends to compare the emission scenario of the present academic year 2019-2020 with the academic year 2016-2017, in which the campus started its operation. The user’s mobility behaviour in these three years is assumed to be changed. Therefore, a mobility survey was planned to be released to the Campus Diagonal-Besòs population in order to figure out their transport routines. Although the survey was fully developed, the exceptional COVID-19 situation impeded the distribution of such. Therefore, five standard user profiles have been determined in order to characterise the different mobility trends.
An emission calculator is developed from scratch in order to achieve accurate and reliable results. Local and specific data for Barcelona city has been used to build the calculator. The results show that private modes of transport are usually more pollutant than public modes of transport. The urban bus is the only public mode that has similar pollutant values to the private vehicles, therefore environmental actions should be taken in that mode. Once the emission results have been found, a Multi-criteria Decision Analysis is performed in order to determine the best and worse environmental options. The analysis differentiates the origin of users, which is stated as the fixed variable.
Lastly, three mobility proposals in order to reduce the overall emission values for the users of the Campus Diagonal-Besòs have been developed. The connection between the Tram system lines or the renovation of the Barcelona’s urban fleet bus are the two most effective proposals but also the ones with higher cost. The implementation of Park&Ride facilities is also proposed as the most fast and lower cost solution.
