Abstract
In this project, a numerical analysis of the stresses of a dental implant is exposed. The main objective of this study is to find out the influence of different parameters on the stress response. It follows a series of studies done in this university, which try to give a more mechanical view of a medical problem. This thesis is made in collaboration with the Faculty of Odontology of Universitat Internacional de Catalunya (UIC) and the Department of Strength of Materials and Structural Engineering. They provided up to six dental implants composed of different materials and its properties. In the past projects, a research on the components and other characteristics of a dental implant was carried out. Then, a model was created: the crown, the screw, and the mandible section. In order to guarantee precise results with reality, the geometry had to be as similar as possible. The next phase of the study consisted on conducting mechanical simulations with the software program ANSYS Workbench, whose numerical analysis was done by using the FEM (finite elements method). Therefore, a proper model was built following the next steps: importation of the geometry, meshing, assigning the properties of the materials selected and setting up the boundary conditions. At first, only static simulations were conducted, but it was in the last project that dynamic simulations were possible to study. Now that this has been achieved, it is possible to perform an in-depth analysis of the stress response. In this project, different types of simulations have been carried out. In the first hand, static simulations were done so as to study the stress response on the apex and represent the distribution of stress among the implant. Then, dynamic simulations were set up to represent the process of human mastication. The objective of these was to see how the dental implant reacted to an impact to a rigid surface and make a comparison of the stress response in the apex and other zones of the dental implant with different parameters such as Young’s Modulus, Poisson’s ratio, density and initial velocity. In addition to the numerical analysis, a statistical multiple regression model was done to observe which variable affected most the stress response. Finally, a model of a Bridge Dental Implant was constructed using the Solidworks software. A static simulation was conducted successfully, and a basic study of stress response could be done. However, dynamic simulations failed to complete because the solution did not converge.
