Abstract
The Automatic Identification System (AIS) is an international standard device for information communication. This device was originally developed as a maritime traffic service. The information is transmitted continuously and in real time from ship to land station, from ship to ship or from land station to ship. This communication allows: i) ship to has have an overview of the maritime traffic around them, ii) plot safer navigation routes, and iii) lands stations to have a better control of the maritime traffic.
This work aims to develop a methodology and analytic study focused on the analysis of the data provided by the AIS for its application in different port management tools such as: a) ship traffic demand and b) the spatial-temporal dynamics of traffic in port waters, c) navigation conditions within the port area and d) the residence time of the vessels within the port, using AIS data for three months: September, October and November of 2019. This thesis has four sections: processing of AIS data, analysis of dock occupation, spatial analysis of speed and occupation time.
This thesis has four sections, the treatment of AIS data, analysis of the occupation of the dock, spatial analysis of the speed and time of occupation.
The first section deals with the statistical analysis of all the AIS data obtained, such as calculating their error, analyzing patterns among data from different months or the trajectories of the vessels according to the typology. Next, the occupation dock comprises two sub-modules: static and dynamic occupation. This section allows us to see the use of the port according to different speeds and according to different variables chosen such as the hourly variable, the day of the week or the type of vessel. Then, the third section, aims to analyze the traffic speed distribution within the port in order to find out about the existence of conflict zones and areas with higher risk of collision, as well as compliance with speed limits set by the port itself. Finally, the last section is dedicated to the study of the time occupation to see which docks are the most occupied temporarily, which type of ship is the one that spends the most time in line and to analyze if the port facilities are used properly.
