Abstract
Advances in technology have throughout the history enabled organizations to improve
their efficiency. With Intelligent Automation (IA), organizations can finally begin to properly
improve the productivity of knowledge-based work, too. With this prospect now at hand,
companies need to figure a way to effectively and efficiently implement IA to their processes.
In knowledge-based work, automation solutions need to be tailored and customized to adapt
to the needs for each target proces. The IA literature and project literature offer the building
blocks and knowledge to construct a model for implementing IA solution to a target process.
The focus on process efficiency, automation and digitization in Novo Nordisk is increasing
and the Company has set 2020 goal of becoming more efficient and digital. This Master’s
Thesis is based on developing an strategic assessment on how a target process of Novo
Nordisk’s supply chain can be automated using Intelligent Automation. The target process
turns around the manual checking and validation of the Certificates of Analysis (CoA) from
the suppliers when they deliver raw and packaging materials. The automation goal is to
substitute this human-manual task with a machine.
Novo Nordisk has never applied Intelligent Automation prior to this project. Thus, the
study is focused around three identified questions of high relevance to Novo Nordisk: what
the technology is about, which are the benefits of automating the target process and how it
can be ensured a proper implementation of the technology. By analysing the current CoA
process state and comparing it with best practices identified through the available literature,
the study has built a framework to strategically assess the pros and cons of IA implementation
process and has developed business case for this specific case study. Through meticulously
analysing the findings from this course of study, required understanding can be formed.
From a managerial viewpoint, the main contribution of this study has been to establish
a template for this IA process model, enabling proper IA implementation projects. Indicated by the success of the case project, the IA implementation process model proved to
be properly made, successful and suitable for IA. To help make IA projects successful, the
study introduces multiple critical success factors that need to be fulfilled; by concentrating
enough resources on each of these factors, managers can ensure successful IA implementation
projects.
