dc.description.abstractAccording to The Green Revolution (Later Papers) the consumption of animal products is rapidly evolving following new consumer trends that have been appearing during recent years (Veganism, Naturalism, Flexitarians, etc.). Given the fact that those trends are not only based in health purposes but also strong moral and ethical reasons, they have impacted not only human diet but also their pets. A basic example of these trends are alternative proteins, that are producing a surge on the production of products that intend to replace meat-based products. Alternatives proteins are a promising topic because they are based on strong growth drivers that make them worth studying, as we will see deeper into the report. They could also be a potential solution to the growing dependency on imported protein and popular sustainability problems that are associated with animal livestock. Those characteristics are making them attractive to start-ups and VC’s incumbents, that see them as a viable and innovative alternative to meat-based products that could be the tool to overcome some of the challenges that the food market is experiencing. The methodology that will be use in this report is based in a general-to-specific approach. First alternative proteins will be studied in general (why are they attractive, which problems to they solve, what types can we encounter, etc.) and then we will apply those principles into dog food and see what advantages and what challenges that could present. Lastly, market viability will be studied to present the conditions that alternative protein pet food should meet in order to become competitive with the actual products. This report aims to answers all the questions regarding this relatively new type of food and present all the necessary evidence to decide whether this could be a news and viable market sector that is worth investing into.
