Abstract
In this thesis, it is presented the description of the elements that compose all the systems intended to inert gas generation, steam generation, crude oil discharge through turbo-pumps, bilge handlingand sewage treatment and retention present in the oil tankers that sail nowadays.Likewise, it is also displayed the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) regulations regarding each and every one of these systems as well as the causes, consequences and solutions to the breakdowns and problems that, due to their usage, these elements suffer. Finally, it is shown the starting and operation procedures of the described systems with the intention to show the reader, in a both theoretical and practical way, their functioning. To do so, the author has used the oil tanker model from the engine room simulator Engine Room Simulator ERS 5000developed by the company Transasas a base for this thesis. This simulator usage, allows explaining the reader the different functions of each elements within the systems as well as the procedures for their operation in the most clear and understandable way possible. The result of this thesis is a theoretical exposition of everything that refers to the covered systems along with the most practical explanation possible of their operation, taking into account the limitations that suppose the factof basing on a simulated ship rather than a real one.
