Abstract
Additive manufacturing or 3D printing is one of the current emerging technologies with most potential in manufacturing. And each improvement in AM techniques can lead to big upgrades in terms of productivity.
The present research assignment is an exploratory work about slicing techniques for 3D printing.
In general slicing and printing of an object in 3D printing is carried out in the cartesian coordinate system. It means it is carried in Z-axis direction i.e one layer upon another, stacking up one on another and the final object is formed. Trying to break this paradigm, the present work explores variations on the slicing techniques such as using polar coordinates for the virtual chopping of the parts prior to 3D-printing.
The aim of the present work is to study the differences (manufacturing times, shapes...) between usual slicing techniques (cartesian) and other possibilities (polar) and so to bring some light on what possible process improvements could be achieved by these.
