Abstract
The purpose of this document is to carry out the development of the first ever prototype to be operative in the fight against desert locust pests in. This project has been developed within the Drones for Desert Locust project of HEMAV Foundation and in collaboration with FAO. Specifically, this document reflects my participation in the project within the team of the Hemav Foundation. Drones for Desert Locust project was initiated with the objective to develop a new methodology to help FAO in the fight against one of the most dangerous pests in the world, the Desert Locust. Locust pests threats agricultural resources that are the base of human and animal subsistence such as crops or grassland. It is one of the most critical and harmful pests due to their capacity to travel by air up to 150 km per day. The aim of the project is to, starting from satellite images that represent great remote areas with difficult access, analyse which are the zones within all the affected countries in which the climatic conditions, lands and vegetation are optimal for the appearance of these insects using drones. To develop this new procedure, the quality of the data captured has been tested and an algorithm has been performed to process it. Moreover, drone’s flight planning and results review application compatible with FAO’s hardware has been developed. All the processes involved in the project depend on the previous step and therefore a linear organized path has been constructed. Finally, it can be confirmed that after the update of the state of the art and the analysis of results there is a considerable leap both at the technological level and at the level of human resources in the methods currently used and the proposed solution. A new line of work and business is opened to combat locust plagues.
